I agree with you. Other than getting traffic by giving free report, you do get tons of email subscriber that may come back to read your post again in future. It might be a long term traffic building.

Bridge knowledge Gap: this is nothing but, read various forums, discussion board or various places where you can figure out that what people asking and try to provide that information at your blog.

I am sure this will definitely improve your traffic and readers base.
